History of Island Realty

Island Realty can trace it's roots back to the 1950’s, when Mr. J.C. Long began developing and building homes on the island.  With his development and building endeavors, Mr. Long hired Al Johnson to handle his rentals and Mr. Johnson eventually opened his own company called “Al Johnson Realty”. Mr. Johnson listed, sold, and managed real estate on Isle of Palms for many years, all while raising his family here.  

Eventually, Mr. and Mrs. Johnson sold the company to Carol and Bill Walters around 1976. The Walters changed the name to “Island Realty” shortly after purchasing the company, and one year later, the Walters were asked to develop and manage the sales operations of the newly developed “Isle of Palms Beach and Racquet Club” (now known as Wild Dunes) at the north end of the Isle of Palms.

In 1977, the Walters asked Don Stone if he would list and sell their first company, “Island Realty”.  Mr. Stone saw the potential for the sales and rental company and decided to purchase it and manage the company with the help of the current employees. Under the management of Don Stone, Island Realty grew from a little “Mom and Pop” sales and rental company to one of the premier operations in the community.

In 1978, Sandy Stone joined Island Realty as a maintenance man and earned his real estate license and broker's license shortly thereafter.  Sandy, his sister Missy, and her husband David Crosby managed Island Realty together until 1993, at which point Missy Crosby and Sandy Stone (along with their spouses) purchased Island Realty from their parents. At this time, Island Realty was a thriving business in the community and had over 50 local employees and 20 sales associates.

In 2000, Sandy Stone and his wife, Peggy, purchased David and Missy Crosby's shares of Island Realty and since then have continued to grow the company to be one of the most successful businesses on the island. Mr. and Mrs. Stone credit their success in part to their partnership with the property owners and the community, as well as providing “A Vacation of a Lifetime” to the returning guests of Island Realty.
