Celebrating 40 Years of Patriots Point

Known for its rich history, the Charleston area is full of historical attractions and museums that will provide any history buff an experience full of interesting facts and knowledge while enjoying the opportunity to be right on the water! Celebrating 40 years, Patriots Point, Home of the USS Yorktown, provides a wonderful opportunity of learning and fun for travelers who are visiting the Lowcountry

When Patriots Point was developed in the 1970's, the overall mission was to develop a museum on the Charleston Harbor that represented the World War II era. The USS Yorktown, an aircraft carrier that was used in WWII, was its main attraction. With its museum and historic landmark ships, Patriots Point is also home to the Cold War Memorial, the Vietnam Experience Exhibit (the only one in the country), the Congressional Medal of Honor Society, and the Medal of Honor Museum. Because each museum and exhibit has been preserved so well, it makes you feel like you are stepping back in time and experiencing what our war veterans went through as they fought for our great country. Through education, testimonials and high quality technology, Patriots Point does an excellent job of telling stories about our nation's history and exemplifying what the nation's bravest men and women faced.

Patriots Point has just celebrated its 40th Anniversary, and we had the opportunity to visit and hear the vision and direction regarding both growth and development for the years to come! As a representative of a company in the Charleston Tourism and Hospitality industry, it was rewarding to hear from Executive Director, Mac Burdette, about what steps Patriots Point wants to take for increasing audience attendance and updating various museum features that will engage new generations.

It was fulfilling to hear the short-term goal of revolving products and technology. The staff wants guests to have an overall great experience, full of education and inspiration, and to most of all, have fun doing it! Being a millennial, I find it very effective if you can reach out to the generations to come through virtual reality and hands-on technology – this gives that personal experience that people will be able to benefit from and remember. Bringing history to life and having interactive exhibits will increase audience attention and will keep newer generations involved and eager to learn – and that's exactly what the team at Patriots Point is after.

What's to come:

  • History being brought to life through user-friendly, interactive exhibits
  • New education programs for schools and field trips
  • Virtual features throughout each museum
  • A rise in the use of animation

Education is something that Patriots Point takes pride in. They make learning fun and prep each tour for school educational programs and field trips. To gain a good understanding, team-based projects are created as well as new programs for overnight campers. Suffice it to say, you will leave this museum with a head full of interesting facts and a taste of vital, important parts of U.S. history.

A lot of great additions to this popular tourist attraction are just around the corner, and we are excited to visit again and to recommend this experience for visitors to our area.
