Vacation Inspiration: Fun Ideas to Try this July

It's hard to believe that it's already July!

If you're looking for things to do besides sitting on the beach (although that's our personal favorite) we've got some great ideas that are perfect for summer!

The Windjammer (follow them @windjammeriop) and the Dinghy (follow them @dinghyiop) on Isle of Palms are great spots to catch some live music! Here's some events and musical artists that each place has coming up this month:

  • The Windjammer
  • July 31--Cowboy Mouth
  • The Dinghy
  • Sundays--Lenny Burridge
  • Mondays--Jeff Bateman and Josh Hughett
  • July 8, 22--The Ingredients
  • July 15, 29--Sunflowers and Sin
  • Wednesdays--Donnie Polk
  • July 10, 11, 18, 25--Gracious Day
  • July 11, 24, 31--Alex Saunders and Friends
  • July 12, 26--Dave Landeo
  • July 12, 19, 26--Josh Hughett
  • July 19--Mel Washington

When it's this hot out, the best way to explore the island is with the wind through your hair. Mopeds are a classic option that get you where you want to go fairly quickly, while also looking great! If you're looking to rent one, Port City Moped (follow them @portcitymoped) is right here on Isle of Palms, and conveniently located close to the Island Realty office, Front Beach, and several local restaurants. If you've never heard of a Moke, this is your chance to try something new! A Moke is an LSV similar to a golf cart, but can actually be driven at night. These vehicles include side-view mirrors, a horn, turn signals, and seat belts. If you flew in to get here, this is a convenient way to get around without having to take an Uber or Lyft! You can rent these at Sealand Adventure Sports on Sullivan's Island (follow them @sealandsports.)

The Turtle Team here on IOP protects nesting sea turtles and their hatchlings on the beach, and this year they've put together a  Scavenger Hunt! There are 6 bronze hatchling sculptures hidden around the Front Beach business district. You can find them all along with their plaques to learn more about sea turtles. Once you've found them all, turn in your brochure to City Hall for a prize! Download the brochure here, and spend the day finding all six with the whole family!

If staying active while exploring is more your speed, the backroads on IOP are great for bike rides. Isle of Palms also has a Recreation Center on 28th Ave. with tennis courts, soccer field, a cardio room, and more, which can easily be accessed by bike. Since the Island is only about 6 miles long, you can get just about anywhere without having to worry about parking!

After you've explored the Islands, cool off with a frozen drink or a sweet treat! Over on Sullivan's Island there's the Co-Op where you can get frosé (frozen rosé) with multiple delicious flavors to choose from. Get your fix in a 16 oz. bottle, a wine bottle, or in their signature tumblers! While this is their most popular item, they also have breakfast and lunch options for a meal on the go. You can stay up to date on everything going on at the Co-Op over on their Instagram page, @coopsullivans (or if you just like seeing pictures of the frosé and reading witty captions)

On a hot day, it doesn't get much better than taking the family out for ice cream and walking on the beach. Isle of Palms has a Ben & Jerry's location on Ocean Blvd. right in Front Beach (follow them @benjerrychs), and on Sullivan's you'll find Beardcat's Sweet Shop (follow them @beardcatssweetshop) which has incredible gelato, and Republic Ice Cream for a classic cone.
